School Swimming Program

school-swimmingAt Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre, the Swim School has made improvements to our schools swimming program. Schools students are offered the opportunity to learn a variety of aquatic skills as well as developing their swimming skills and strokes. Listed below is a brief description of the activities included in the program:

New Aquatic Activities

Water Safety

Water safety will be taught on week 3 of each school’s swimming program. We request that all students wear clothes for this week. It is important that all students experience performing safety skills in a real life survival situation.

Race Skills

Students will learn correct racing procedures for a race. They will be taught how to dive, perform a freestyle tumble turn and how to finish a race in all four strokes.

Deep Water Introduction

This will be taught progressively for beginner swimmers. Students will be instructed in: Confidently entering deep water, what to do if they have fallen into the water, and how to exit the water by using different methods. For more advanced learners we will aim to swim a lap of a 50m pool either assisted or unassisted.

Relay Practice

Students will be instructed in correct procedures of relay races, rules and timing.

Use of P.F.D (Personal Floatation Devices)

All students will be instructed in wearing and removal of a life saving jacket. Boat safety will also be included in this session whilst wearing the P.F.D.

Water Polo

This can be a great way for students to work as a team in an aquatic environment. Water polo skills will be practised, for eg. Passing and catching, treading water, swim technique. Basic rules will be taught and all students will have the opportunity to participate in a modified water polo game.

All our instructors are looking forward to teaching the new program format to student’s this summer. We look forward to seeing you at the pool!
